As part of our ongoing highlight on Gamay, we’re delighted to bring you a special case of expressions from our range at Radford Dale and producers we hold in high esteem from the Gamay heartland of Beaujolais, in the southern region of Burgundy.

Our project with Gamay in the Cape is approaching 10 years (read more here), and we’re thrilled at the gains made and reaction to the wines to date. From our sister company, Radford Dale Imports, we’ve long championed the exceptional quality to value on offer from Beaujolais, with some 50+ examples now available within our portfolio.
Beaujolais is on a role and with recent features via the likes of Neal Martin at Vinous: “The Future is Beaujolais”, the scene is fast changing as the market catches on and demand soars.

“Something I’ve always loved about the Gamay varietal, is its ability to straddle the finesse of Pinot Noir and the spice of Syrah, and it’s so heartening to be able to do that in a South African context. Our understanding of Gamay is starting to deepen, and with it our love of the variety as well.” Jacques de Klerk, Head winemaker Radford Dale.

We’re thrilled to offer you this one-of-a-kind "Taste of Gamay" mixed case - SA v France.

Get your wine loving friends around and open up all six bottles - serve them blind if you like - and discover the variety and nuances of this elegant, balanced and lighter style of red grape, with Radford Dale's three expressions from Stellenbosch, plus a 'Villages' and two 'Cru' examples from Beaujolais.

1. DOMAINE DOMINIQUE PIRON

Dominique Piron’s oldest known ancestor was born in Morgon in 1590. Since then there have been 14 generations of wine growers in the family. Morgon and Moulin à Vent wines have long been renowned among France’s finest wines. In a vineyard with difficult terrain− 30% steep slopes and a virtual patchwork of parcels Dominique Piron is engaged in sustainable winegrowing. On winegrowing land filled with old broken-down granite and schist the watchwords are natural balance and biodiversity. For vinification the goal is to create terroir wines wines of character that remain fruity subtle and elegant.

BEAUJOLAIS VILLAGES 2020 : “Graphite and pomegranate and wild night-jasmine, bosky fragrance. Particularly fine tannin texture, like a flute whittled out of olive wood and polished to a silky sheen. The fruit, dark red and sculpted, has startling purity for a Beaujolais-Villages. Clean, long, evening-breeze-fresh, graphite-lined finish. Very good value.” JR

2. DOMAINE DE LA GROSSE PIERRE

Domaine de la Grosse Pierre is located on the granite slopes of Chiroubles in the heart of Beaujolais vintages. This family estate was created by my grandfather Georges Passot in the 1960s, succeeded by my parents Alain & Véronique in 1979 and since 2018 it is my turn, the third generation! After various experiences in sommellerie in France and abroad I decided to come back to my native land in Chiroubles. Today we cultivate 9 ha of vines on three crus.

CHIROUBLES ‘LA GROSSE PIERRE 2021’: “Bright ruby red in color with a nose overflowing with small, fine red fruit. Clean. Pure. Elegant and pleasantly light mouthfeel. Playful and fresh. Soft tannins support the beautiful red and black fruit and give the wine the necessary structure. Also some herbs. The aftertaste is not too heavy.”

3. CHÂTEAU DE LA CHAIZE

Château de La Chaize is among the oldest, most historic estates in Burgundy’s Beaujolais region. Cared for by the same family for nearly three and a half centuries, the estate has been passed on to new owners, the Gruy family, who are equally committed to managing the estate with the utmost care, while implementing an ambitious environmental plan. Among the many initiatives is the conversion of all vineyards to organic farming, the adoption of precision viticulture, reducing carbon their carbon footprint, and recycling every by-product from viti- and vinicultural activity, to achieve zero waste.

The estate covers nearly 300 ha of contiguous land, including 100 ha of vines in Brouilly.

LES DEUX AMIS BROUILLY 2019: “Fresh black and blue fruit aromas are brightened by notes of cracked pepper and smoky minerals. Silky and open-knit”
